WHY…. WHY… WHY…

ADMIN VIRGIL

Hello! today we are going to do a review on Taeyeon's comeback mini album "Why". I am all for cursive handwritings but this title font for her album is one of the laziest way to write the three letter word.

The album has a total of seven song in it which are:

01. Why
02. Starlight (Feat. DEAN)
03. Fashion
04. Hands on Me
05. Up & Down (Feat. 효연 (HYOYEON))
06. Good Thing

07. Night

"Why" is a beautiful track about love and asking/claiming that the loved one is still in the singer's thoughts. The song is beautiful and its subtle EDM vibe really clicks well with Taeyeon's textured of vocal which is soft and flows like water. I especially love it when she sings "Why~". A beautiful track to kick off the album.

"Starlight" is a love duet and features DEAN in it and boy does the man deliver or what! hahahah His subtle soft voice surprises matches well with Taeyeon's softer vocals. The song has an addicting chorus line and the two really sound like they are in love. Such a pretty song.

The music video for both "Starlight" and "WHY" are supposed to be see in correlation with one another, and in the order that I have mentioned it. I am not really a delver in plot when it comes to KPop music video cause very few of them even have any but apparently this here is quite a story! Teayeon is supposedly meant to be some kind of alien and meets DEAN on her visits spends time with him but leaves when her land calls her. In the next video ("WHY"), she comes back to Earth only to realize that she is too late. Aesthetics is SM's key point and is well used in both of these music videos.

Enough "love and lost" tales now it is time for some "Fashion"! This song has a bass dance track which is mild but builds towards the chorus. I love how SM is now slowly incorporating a lot EDM soundtracks into artists' tracks. A fresh groovy number!

I love how intricately "Hands on Me" starts- the falling melody provide by the piano is so moving and adds a sense of depth in the tracks. This melody layered with electronic accompaniments really lifts the essence of the tracks but I feel that Teayeon is on a different tangent with the tracks. I can clearly see a distinction between the voice and melody, I don't really thing they blend well with one another. A shame.

"Up and Down" features HyoYeon and if my girl H is in something I will give it a listen and a good thing I did. The two one up each other in this incredibly eighties inspired track number. I love the tension this track creates and the beats are clean and slick, it is different form what I have been listening to till now. If feels like listening to some old-school Broadway performance. I would really like to see the performance video for this track for once.

I don't really know what Taeyeon is asking for when she sings "give me the good thing" in this track "Good thing". The tempo and tune of this song sounds vaguely familiar to me perhaps you can help me figure it out in the comments section below! In all I neither like nor hate this track, it is sort off in the middle section. Something about this track is off putting.

The last track in the album is "Night" which has a generic beat and doesn't really show her vocal skills in the beat light. I feel her voice gets drowned in the overwhelming soundtrack.

I feel this album was rushed and was really prepared well and I very much prefer her debut solo album to this. It is kinda like saying that we prefer the first film to its sequel but that is how it is here, the first album was way better and showed her skills off well. Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
