Story Op.1.Arriving
ADMIN VIRGIL
UM......... Hello, Mr. Kim, God called.
He said he wanted his voice back.
How many times have you told yourself that 'He is Human, this is a human' voice' whilst listening to Kim JongHyun sing. Trust me, no matter how many times you repeat it, it just wont do, he makes you wonder if voices like this truly exists. JongHyun's voice is pure manna.
With his solo concert ‘The
Story by Jong Hyun’ fast approaching, Shinee’s Jonghyun dropped this very
special album Story Op. 1. Arriving. As if dying over not witnessing the concert in person wasn't bad enough, you ease my decent to death with this album?
The album comes with nine tracks which are
‘End of a day’, ‘U & I’, ‘Like You’, ’Diphylleia grayi’, ‘Happy Birthday’,
‘I`m sorry’, ‘02:34’, ‘Fine’ and ‘Maybe tomorrow’
The album starts with the
title track, ‘End of a day’. This song starts off with some moving melodies and
Jong hyun’s voice washes out the score and penetrates deep into the lyrics. The
song is sung is a wispy manner and rather gently lifts the moods. The music
video which accompanies this song is shot in an unusual manner much like to
cater to the song. The screen is divided into two with each side showing the
man and the woman respectively. The two wander about and end up coming
together. The song and the music video build up on one another.
In ‘U & I’, Jong Hyun
tries to bring up the tempo and the mood. The song has classic tech music in it
with auto tuned rhythm, and Jong Hyun shows off his rather unique crooning
voice.
‘Like You’ keeps up the up
tempo beats. The song has a loud clapping beat and the chorus is loud,
demanding attention. This song has a lot to offer and makes for a fun listen.
The chorus is particularly catching.
‘’Diphylleia grayi’’ also
known as just Diphylleia or more commonly known as the Skeleton flower is a
peculiar white petal flower which turns transparent when in contact with water.
Much
like the delicate petals of this flower, Jong hyun’s voice merely floats above
the melody. The melody is powerful and that contradicts with Jong Hyun’s
melting voice. This song is true perfection and is a must listen to in this
album. The best of Jong Hyun’s work and his vocal ability. My personal favourite!
Things go mellow jazz with
‘Happy Birthday’, Jong Hyun once again choses to sing in a whisper like tune
but gains momentum towards the end of the song.
The violins and Jong Hyun’s
voice harmonize into perfection in the chorus of ‘I’m Sorry’, the song gives
off a serious feel because of its multitude of instrumental interludes. The
song is simple yet out of the ordinary with its musicality.
It is raining is the next
track and that gives off the cold left out feeling which ’02: 34’ seem to
elude. The song is particularly brighter in mood and tempo than the other
songs. The song even incorporates what sounds to be a rap by Jong Hyun himself
which is different and makes up for a surprise listen. This song incorporates
some unusual sound bites and is worth listening to.
Jong Hyun incorporates some
techno beats in ‘Fine’ as the song raises the temperature. The song is daring
but deals with the subject in a light manner. The song has an addictive beats
that would surely make one move to its beats. The reaches its high point where
Jong Hyun croons in ways that adds more tension to the track.
‘Maybe Tomorrow’ has a sweet
subtle beat and the jazz like rhythm elevates Jong Hyun’s voice. The chorus is
unique as it incorporates a female voice asking ‘Really’. This song seems to
end rather short than the other song but is a great song to end the album with.
The grandness of musical
instruments used throughout the album cannot be taken lightly. Jong Hyun weaves
his voice around these music score and in many songs in the album, gives a
portion of the song to the music alone. Jong Hyun shows off his credibility in
this album.
Too much is never a bad thing in Kpop.
